There’s no nice way to say this; your laptop is dead. If all hope seems lost, don’t panic, there are some ways you can still salvage your data.
If you have the right tools, it’s not hard to salvage data from a dead laptop. I did it just yesterday, and it took less than an hour.
The computer in question was a 2005-era ThinkPad T43, running Windows XP. It had ended its useful life as a backup machine for another ThinkPad T43 that was still in use; when the replacement machine arrived, I decided to donate the old one to Goodwill rather than sell it on eBay. But first I wanted to erase the hard drive so no one could get at my data. So I went into Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and clicked on “Uninstall a program.”
Nothing happened. The little progress indicator window opened, but never moved beyond zero percent complete. After waiting a few minutes, I tried again. Still nothing. Eventually I had to force-quit the uninstaller. At some point during all this Windows got confused about what time it was, and started reporting that the date was December 31, 1969—the epoch of Unix timekeeping—but otherwise everything seemed OK.
